COMSUBIN Italy Physical Fitness Test

The Italian COMSUBIN, short for Comando Raggruppamento Subacquei e Incursori Teseo Tesei, is the frogman unit of Italy. They are specialized in counter-terrorism, hostage rescue, water, and land infiltration, and many more. They are sub-divided into GOI and GOS. GOI's are the Raiders and GOS' are the military divers.

To join the COMSUBIN Unit of Italy, one must first enter the Navy. One cannot be older than 27 years of age. They have to meet the minimum requirement of 165 cm and have obtained their high school diploma. Furthermore, the candidates cannot have any previous criminal record. Only 10% will make it through the entire Selection Course.

Italy Comsubin Workout

During this phase, which can be considered the pre-selection phase for GOI - Comsubin. Usually, this pre-selection starts in May. The candidates will have to undergo various medical examinations and face the physical and water test listed below. Once the candidates successfully pass those tests, they will be allowed to the Selection Course. The physical fitness test starts with a tower jump into the water and then the candidate needs to prove that he can swim non-stop in the water. The numbers for various events, highlighted in black are made up at this point. Those numbers are adjusted to the numbers from the G.I.S., which should not be too far away from the numbers for the COMSUBIN.

The Selection is divided into several phases. The first phase lasts 12 weeks and is called Ground Phase. Candidates will undergo a lot of physical testings. Candidates will perform a lot of calisthenics, runnings, and will be subjected to various swimming challenges. As the course progresses, the testings will also become harder from week to week. This phase finishes with a 40 KM ruck march with an 18 KG backpack. This ruck has to be finished in less than 7 hours.


The second phase, also called Water Phase, lasts 13 weeks. Physical training becomes more intense during this phase. The main focus of this phase is water training, which will be underwater swims, regular swims, underwater swims with oxygen breathing machines. During this phase, candidates usually have a swim buddy. They will also study a lot during this phase, and will also be tested. This is considered to be the hardest phase.

The third phase, which is considered to be the amphibious phase, and lasts another 12 weeks. During this phase, candidates will be trained in the sea and land tactics will be trained in Improvised Explosive Device training, and have to undergo a 3-night reconnaissance mission. Physical Training does not stop in this phase.


The last phase, lasting another 15 weeks, is called Operations Phase. In this phase, candidates need to demonstrate all the learned stuff mixed in complex realistic missions. They will also undergo various final written and oral tests. Once they pass those tests, they will receive the Comsubin Green Beret. Before being able to join the rest of the team, they will have to undergo another 4-week parachute training, followed by a 6 - 8 months course, that teaches the operator how to fast-rope from helicopters, shooting in motion, ground combat, naval attacks, close quarter combat training, and helicopter operations.

Attributes of a COMSUBIN Operator:

The Comsubin Operator is taught various characteristics throughout their training. They learn how to be patient, silent, and tenacious. Most do not look like bodybuilders when Selection starts. They more so look like middle-distance runners. Those operators who make it through Selection are men, who are not afraid of danger for themselves and others. They are not Rambos, but they are not afraid of the unknown.
