Physical Fitness Requirements from the Spanish Elite Police

GEO, Grupo Especial de Operaciones, is one of the elite police units from the Spanish Police. They were founded to be able to counter terrorism situations in Spain. The decision was made after 4 policemen were killed by a local terrorist organization. This highly trained group of elite police are also experts in hostage rescue, VIP protection, underwater explosive ordnance disposal, and more.

To join, one must be already an established officer with 2 years of experience in the National Police Corps. The Physical Fitness Test listed below is the official screening test. To pass you will need to however score more than just pass in most categories. The reason why is that you need to pass with a very good score, which equals 5 points. The test allows you to not be proficient in one category, but even it out in another one.

Pre-Selection - G.E.O.

This test involves 5 different exercises, which have to be completed in the listed order. The swim is performed by jumping from the blocks into water. The run is performed on a regular 400-meter track in a group. The sprints are performed in pairs. Those candidates who perform well on the test will undergo further testings, such as a psycho technical exam and a personal interview. Those candidates, who are deemed to be fit for the Selection Phase of GEO, receive further invitations.

Curso De Especialización - GEO

Selection Phase, also called "Curso de Especialización", Specialization Course, lasts 7 months. Candidates will learn how to fast rappel from towers, lots of shooting, hostage rescue, martial arts, lots of cross country running, calisthenics with tires over your head, group pushups, obstacle course, lots of hours in classroom settings and equipment diving. During this phase, those former police officers become expert climbers, expert divers, expert paratroopers, and expert shooters. They learn to master everything that has to do with explosives, terrorist groups, and assaults on means of transport. Candidates will also face a 20km of March.

GEO - España - Training

Those candidates who will become operators are considered highly qualified professionals. They will obtain extraordinary reflexes and earn absolute confidence in themselves and their colleagues. They train with various units from all around the world, such as NOCS and GIS from Italy, GOE from Portugal, ESI from Belgium, the British SAS, the Austrian Eko Cobra, the FBI HRT from the U.S., the Algerian G.I.S., GEO from Ecuador, the Honduran GIS and GSG9 from Germany.
